Ungano-Tena Ungano-Tena (U-Tena) is a grassroots organization based in the Mukru-Viwandani slum of East Nairobi, Kenya. U-Tena is a performing arts group that uses dance, theater, puppetry, and music to provide the community free education about HIV/STIs, sexual and reproductive health, and other related topics. U-Tena, in partnership with GlobeMed at Brown, also created a female mentorship program called the KUZA project.
GlobeMed at Brown has been partnered with U-Tena since the formation of our chapter in 2011. We support U-Tena in four major ways: (1) communicating weekly, (2) raising funds for the KUZA project, (3) sending interns each summer to evaluate KUZA and foster our partnership, and (4) raising awareness for our partner organization through advocacy campaigns.
KUZA Project The KUZA Project is a two-year mentorship program for girls ages 12-17. During the first year of the program, girls are taught lessons on sexual and reproductive health, HIV/STIs, body image and self-esteem, healthy relationships, and life skills. The second year of the program focuses on financial literacy and crafting, providing opportunities for the girls to make and sell crafts and create bank accounts. The group of mentors for the project is composed of young women from the community who have been trained on mentorship and the program's curriculum.
